A loud horn sounded, letting him know that he could now roll his government issued sedan through the gates. In his mind, Nick Noriega had envisioned an estate with vines crawling the perimeter fence and a grand driveway. A converted mansion, now used for the care of the mentally ill. But this wasnât a Stephen King novel. In 2019, the mentally ill who have been convicted of a crime were housed in facilities owned and operated by the Department of Corrections. Which meant high metal fences, open gravel courtyards, security checks, and full-time medical staff.
Nick parked in the visitor lot as instructed and pinned his badge to his suit jacket. The exterior of the Institute for the Criminally Insane was beige on beige. The cement walls had perhaps been stark white at one time, but yellowed after years and settled into an off-white color with water stains marring the sides. The gravel was a fine yellowish stone as well, likely a cost-saving measure as they would only need to restock on rubble every few years, instead of having a regular lawn care service.
His footsteps crunched on the gravel as he marched to the front door. Another loud buzz sounded as the door released and he entered. He expected to feel more trepidation as he approached. As an innocent man, he expected to sweat at the idea of entering a prison. While this facility was meant to provide care for the inmates first, they were still not free to leave. But with each gate he passed through, heading deeper and deeper into the labyrinth, he felt tranquil, docile. Perhaps it was the intentional design of the facility. Colors on the walls and materials of the uniforms selected for their unique properties that would promote calm and peace.
Checking in again at the front desk, he signed and timestamped his entry and stated his intent to visit with Gus Blanity. Nick read through his complete file after he first received the letter. It was light. Very light. Most criminal files that he had access to, being associated with a shadow agency did have unique advantages, came with a full incident report, court transcripts, birth certificate, report cards, and even dental exam notes. But Blanityâs file started the night of his crime. It was like he hadnât existed at all before he swooped out of a dark alley and murdered Hank Jankowski back in 2008.
Of course, he knew of Ninaâs connection to Blanity before he ever showed her the letter. He had been curious as to her reaction. There were a lot of strange things happening all around Ms. Marks. Too many to be a coincidence, too many for her to be innocent in the eyes of the Kairos Agency. But he needed proof. For a brief moment he pictured himself ripping up a file, shredding evidence. He blinked the thought away. Where did that come from? He wondered this to himself. Nick Noriega was always one to follow the rules, to pursue the truth.
